Tipping in the US: the basics

Tipping is not legally required in the United States, but it is a deeply embedded social expectation for most personal services. Unlike many countries where service charges are included in the price, American service workers in many industries are paid a tipped minimum wage, as low as $2.13/hour federally, with the expectation that tips bring their pay to at least the standard minimum wage.

In practice this means tips are not a bonus for exceptional service. They are a baseline component of compensation. For restaurant servers, hair stylists, tattoo artists, massage therapists, and similar workers, not tipping for satisfactory service is the equivalent of shorting their paycheck.

The standard benchmark across most services is 18–20% of the pre-tax total. For flat-rate services like valet parking and hotel housekeeping, a per-interaction cash amount ($2–5) replaces the percentage calculation.

Key tipping principles

Cash vs card

Cash is preferred for most personal service workers. It reaches them immediately with no processing fees, no pooling, and no delay. Many workers at salons, studios, and barbershops lose a portion of card tips to processing fees. When in doubt, bring cash.

Tip on the pre-tax amount

Tip on the pre-tax subtotal. Pre-tax tipping is the standard convention in the US. The practical difference on most transactions is under $1.

Discounts and vouchers

Always tip on the full price of the service, not the discounted amount you paid. A Groupon, membership rate, or promotional price reduces your cost, not the worker's effort. A $90 massage covered by a $40 Groupon deserves an $18 tip.

Service charges on your bill

A "service charge" or "service fee" on your bill may or may not go to workers. Many establishments add these fees as revenue. If you see a service charge, ask whether it goes to staff before also leaving a tip.

No Tax on Tips, since July 2025

Federal income tax is no longer withheld from tip income for eligible service workers earning under $160,000/year. Your tips now have a greater direct impact on workers' take-home pay than before. See the No Tax on Tips calculator →
