How much should you tip for tattoo removal?
At a dedicated removal studio, 15–20% of each session: $30–40 on a $200 session. At a med spa it is optional, around 10–15%. When a doctor or nurse does it in a clinic, no tip is expected.
What makes removal different from almost any other tipped service is that you are paying for a course, not a visit. Most tattoos need 6–12 sessions spaced six to eight weeks or more apart, so a removal can run a year or longer. A $200 session tipped at 17% over eight sessions is about $275 in tips, worth budgeting for alongside the treatment itself.
Studio or clinic, and a course of 6–12 sessions
- Ink colors: black and dark blue usually respond fastest. Green, light blue, yellow and white often take extra sessions and more careful work. A multi-color piece is a reason to sit at the top of the range.
- Size and density: a large or heavily saturated tattoo means more passes per session and more cooling and comfort care from the technician.
- Fading for a cover-up: lightening a tattoo so an artist can cover it usually takes fewer sessions than full removal. Tip each of those sessions the same way.
- Between-session care: a technician who walks you through blistering, healing and sun protection, and checks how you healed before the next pass, is doing more than the minutes on the clock.
