How much should you tip an airport shuttle driver?
Tip airport shuttle drivers $2–5 per person for shared shuttles, or 15–20% of the fare for private shuttles. Add $1–2 per bag if the driver loaded and unloaded your luggage. For a party of 2 with 4 bags on a shared shuttle, budget $10–14 total.
Hotel shuttles are often free, but the same tipping rules apply, $2–5 per person each way. "Complimentary shuttle" means the ride is included in your hotel stay, not that the driver works for free. Tip at the end of each leg of the trip.
Shared or private, bags and odd hours
- Shared vs private: Shared shuttles use the per-person flat model ($2–5/person). Private car services use the percentage model (15–20% of fare). The math comes out similar for most trips.
- Luggage handling: Add $1–2 per bag for every suitcase or large bag the driver loaded into the vehicle and unloaded at drop-off. This is standard and widely expected.
- Trip length: Standard airport routes (15–30 min) warrant the base tip. Transfers over an hour merit 15–20% regardless of shared or private format.
- Timing: Early morning (before 6am) and late night (after 11pm) pickups warrant tipping at the higher end. These drivers work inconvenient hours for your schedule.
- If the driver waited extra time due to a flight delay or slow baggage claim, acknowledge it with a stronger tip.
Airport shuttle tipping etiquette
Have cash ready before the shuttle arrives. Fumbling for bills while other passengers wait is awkward. Have small bills ($1s and $5s) on hand for shared shuttles. For pre-booked private services, you can add the tip when paying by card at booking or at drop-off.
For multi-stop shared shuttles where you're not the first drop-off, the driver may have carried your bags longer than expected. Acknowledge that with the standard tip or slightly above when you exit.
