How much should you tip at a day spa?

If multiple therapists or estheticians worked on you, tip each person separately based on their individual service rather than leaving one combined tip. This makes sure each team member gets fair recognition for their specific work.
Factors that affect how much to tip
- Check for auto-gratuity first: This is the single most important step. Resort spas, hotel spas, and many day spas include gratuity automatically. Tipping twice is unnecessary and awkward to reverse.
- Single vs multiple therapists: If one therapist provided all your services, tip 20% on the total. If different people worked on you, tip each based on their portion.
- Service type: Standard massages and facials warrant 20%. Advanced treatments (microdermabrasion, chemical peels, hot stone, lymphatic drainage) merit 20–25% for the additional skill required.
- The tip percentage is the same regardless of spa price point. A $80 facial and a $200 facial both warrant 20%. The dollar amounts differ but the expectation is consistent.
- Medical spa services: Botox, fillers, and laser treatments by medical professionals don't carry the same tip expectation. For esthetician services at a medspa (facials, peels), 15–20% is fair.
Day spa tipping etiquette
For couples spa treatments, tip each therapist separately, 20% of each person's individual service cost. A $250 couples massage ($125 per person) means $25 per therapist, handed to each directly.
At a resort spa, the tip process often happens at checkout through the billing system. Even if you're paying with a room charge, the tip field on the receipt routes directly to the service staff. Fill it in before signing.
If you're redeeming a gift card or promotional offer, tip based on the full value of the service, not the amount you paid. A therapist providing a $150 facial that was gifted to you deserves a $30 tip regardless of what the sender paid.
