How much should you tip a body piercer?
The standard tip for a body piercer is 20% of the total cost, piercing fee plus jewelry combined. For a $60 piercing with basic jewelry, that's $12. For a $120 piercing with high-quality implant-grade jewelry, tip $24.
Many clients tip only on the piercing fee and forget the jewelry cost, but your piercer curated options, recommended the right metals for your anatomy, and fit the jewelry as part of the appointment. The full combined total is the correct base for your tip.
Like tattoo artists, most piercers work on a commission split with the studio, typically 40–60% of their earnings. Tips go 100% to the piercer and make a meaningful difference in their actual take-home pay.
Factors that affect how much to tip
- Tip apprentices 25–30%. They charge a lot less but provide the same sterile environment and consultation. Tips are a larger share of their income while they build their client base.
- Placement difficulty: Complex anatomy, unusual placement requests, or piercings that required multiple marking attempts and consultations warrant tipping at 22–25%.
- Multiple piercings: Tip 20% on the combined total for all piercings done in one session. Multi-piercing appointments require careful planning of angles, spacing, and jewelry sizing.
- Jewelry consultation: If your piercer spent real time explaining metal grades, sizing, and healing expectations, that knowledge and time is worth acknowledging with a stronger tip.
- Cash preference: Same as tattoo studios, many piercing studios charge card processing fees. Cash tips go fully to your piercer.
Piercing tipping etiquette
Tip after the piercing is complete and you're satisfied with the placement. Hand cash directly to your piercer rather than leaving it at the front desk. If you're returning for a jewelry downsize or change (typically 6–8 weeks after initial healing), tip $5–10 for that quick service.
For repiercing a previously closed or rejected piercing, tip the full 20%. Repiercings often require more careful assessment of scar tissue and anatomy than a fresh piercing.
